Self-recognition has been demonstrated by a select number of primate species and is often used as an index of self-awareness. Whether a specialized neural mechanism for self-face recognition in humans exists remains unclear. We used event-related fMRI to investigate brain regions selectively activated by images of one's own face. Ten right-handed normal subjects viewed digital morphs between their own face and a gender-matched familiar other presented in a random sequence. Subjects were instructed to press a button with the right hand if the image looked like their own face, and another button if it looked like a familiar or scrambled face. Contrasting the trials in which images contain more "self" with those containing more familiar "other" revealed signal changes in the right hemisphere (RH) including the inferior parietal lobule, inferior frontal gyrus, and inferior occipital gyrus. The opposite contrast revealed voxels with higher signal intensity for images of "other" than for "self" in the medial prefrontal cortex and precuneus. Additional contrasts against baseline revealed that activity in the "self" minus "other" contrasts represent signal increases compared to baseline (null events) in "self" trials, while activity in the "other" minus "self" contrasts represent deactivations relative to baseline during "self" trials. Thus, a unique network involving frontoparietal structures described as part of the "mirror neuron system" in the RH underlies self-face recognition, while regions comprising the "default/resting state" network deactivate less for familiar others. We provide a model that reconciles these findings and previously published work to account for the modulations in these two networks previously implicated in social cognition.

We investigated how political party affiliation and political attitudes modulate neural activity while viewing faces of presidential candidates. Ten registered Democrats and 10 registered Republicans were scanned in an event-related functional MRI paradigm while viewing pictures of the faces of George Bush, John Kerry, and Ralph Nader during the 2004 United States presidential campaign. We found that compared with viewing one's own candidate, viewing the candidate from the opposing political party produced signal changes in cognitive control circuitry in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate, as well as in emotional regions such as the insula and anterior temporal poles. BOLD signal in these regions correlated with subjects' self-reported ratings of how they felt emotionally about the candidates. These data suggest that brain activity when viewing a politician's face is affected by the political allegiance of the viewer and that people regulate their emotional reactions to opposing candidates by activating cognitive control networks.

Us versus them: Political attitudes and party affiliation influence neural response to faces of presidential candidates.

We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural systems responding to the sight and to the sound of an action. Subjects saw a video of paper tearing in silence (V), heard the sound of paper tearing (A), and saw and heard the action simultaneously (A + V). Compared to a non-action control stimulus, we found that hearing action sounds (A) activated the anterior inferior frontal gyrus and middle frontal gyrus in addition to primary auditory cortex. The anterior inferior frontal gyrus, which is known to be activated by environmental sounds, also seems to be involved in recognizing actions by sound. Consistent with previous research, seeing an action video (V) compared with seeing a non-action video activated the premotor cortex, intraparietal cortex, and the pars opercularis of the inferior frontal gyrus. An A + V facilitation effect was found in the ventral premotor cortex on the border of areas 44, 6, 3a, and 3b for the action stimuli but not for the control stimuli. This region may be involved in integrating multimodal information about actions. These data provide evidence that the ventral premotor cortex may provide an action representation that abstracts across both agency (self and other) and sensory modality (hearing and seeing). This function may be an important precursor of language functions.

What are the neural correlates of insight solutions? To explore this question we asked participants to perform an anagram task while in the fMRI scanner. Previous research indicates that anagrams are unique in that they can yield both insight and search solutions in expert subjects. Using a single-trial fMRI paradigm, we utilized the anagram methodology to explore the neural correlates of insight versus search solutions. We used both reaction time measures and subjective reports to classify each trial as a search or insight solution. Data indicate that verbal insight solutions activate a distributed neural network that includes bilateral activation in the insula, the right prefrontal cortex, and the anterior cingulate. These areas are discussed with their possible role in evaluation and metacognition of insight solutions, as well as attention and monitoring during insight.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a noninvasive method that holds promise for treating several psychiatric disorders. Yet the most effective location and parameters for treatment need more exploration. Also, whether rTMS is an effective treatment for individuals with a DSM-IV diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) has not been empirically tested. The goal of this pilot study was to evaluate whether functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-guided rTMS is effective in reducing symptoms of GAD.

A preliminary study of fMRI-guided rTMS in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder.

We have previously shown that a right inferior frontal mirror neuron area for grasping responds differently to observed grasping actions embedded in contexts that suggest different intentions, such as drinking and cleaning (Iacoboni, Molnar-Szakacs, Gallese, Buccino, Mazziotta, & Rizzolatti, 2005). Information about intentions, however, may be conveyed also by the grasping action itself: for instance, people typically drink by grasping the handle of a cup with a precision grip. In this fMRI experiment, subjects watched precision grips and whole-hand prehensions embedded in a drinking or an eating context. Indeed, in the right inferior frontal mirror neuron area there was higher activity for observed precision grips in the drinking context. Signal changes in the right inferior frontal mirror neuron area were also significantly correlated with scores on Empathic Concern subscale of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, a measure of emotional empathy. These data suggest that human mirror neuron areas use both contextual and grasping type information to predict the intentions of others. They also suggest that mirror neuron activity is strongly linked to social competence.

There is evidence that the right hemisphere is involved in processing self-related stimuli. Previous brain imaging research has found a network of right-lateralized brain regions that preferentially respond to seeing one's own face rather than a familiar other. Given that the self is an abstract multimodal concept, we tested whether these brain regions would also discriminate the sound of one's own voice compared to a friend's voice. Participants were shown photographs of their own face and friend's face, and also listened to recordings of their own voice and a friend's voice during fMRI scanning. Consistent with previous studies, seeing one's own face activated regions in the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), inferior parietal lobe and inferior occipital cortex in the right hemisphere. In addition, listening to one's voice also showed increased activity in the right IFG. These data suggest that the right IFG is concerned with processing self-related stimuli across multiple sensory modalities and that it may contribute to an abstract self-representation.

The self across the senses: an fMRI study of self-face and self-voice recognition.

Previous evidence suggests that directional social cues (e.g., eye gaze) cause automatic shifts in attention toward gaze direction. It has been proposed that automatic attentional orienting driven by social cues (social orienting) involves a different neural network from automatic orienting driven by nonsocial cues. However, previous neuroimaging studies on social orienting have only compared gaze cues to symbolic cues, which typically engage top-down mechanisms. Therefore, we directly compared the neural activity involved in social orienting to that involved in purely automatic nonsocial orienting. Twenty participants performed a spatial cueing task consisting of social (gaze) cues and automatic nonsocial (peripheral squares) cues presented at short and long stimulus (cue-to-target) onset asynchronies (SOA), while undergoing fMRI. Behaviorally, a facilitation effect was found for both cue types at the short SOA, while an inhibitory effect (inhibition of return: IOR) was found only for nonsocial cues at the long SOA. Imaging results demonstrated that social and nonsocial cues recruited a largely overlapping fronto-parietal network. In addition, social cueing evoked greater activity in occipito-temporal regions at both SOAs, while nonsocial cueing recruited greater subcortical activity, but only for the long SOA (when IOR was found). A control experiment, including central arrow cues, confirmed that the occipito-temporal activity was at least in part due to the social nature of the cue and not simply to the location of presentation (central vs. peripheral). These results suggest an evolutionary trajectory for automatic orienting, from predominantly subcortical mechanisms for nonsocial orienting to predominantly cortical mechanisms for social orienting.

W&auml;hrend der religi&ouml;sen Glaubens bleibt eine der wichtigsten Funktionen des menschlichen Lebens, ist wenig bekannt &uuml;ber seine Beziehung zu gew&ouml;hnlichen glauben auf der Ebene des Gehirns. Noch ist es bekannt, ob religi&ouml;se Gl&auml;ubige und Ungl&auml;ubige unterscheiden sich in wie sie Tatsachenbehauptungen bewerten. Unser Labor hat fr&uuml;her funktionelle Neuroimaging glauben als eine allgemeine Art der Kognition [1] zu studieren, und andere haben uns speziell auf religi&ouml;sem Glauben [2]. Keine Forschung hat jedoch diese zwei Zust&auml;nde des Geistes direkt verglichen.

While religious faith remains one of the most significant features of human life, little is known about its relationship to ordinary belief at the level of the brain. Nor is it known whether religious believers and nonbelievers differ in how they evaluate statements of fact. Our lab previously has used functional neuroimaging to study belief as a general mode of cognition [1], and others have looked specifically at religious belief [2]. However, no research has compared these two states of mind directly.

The neural correlates of religious and nonreligious belief.

Using multivariate pattern analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging data, we found that the subjective experience of sound, in the absence of auditory stimulation, was associated with content-specific activity in early auditory cortices in humans. As subjects viewed sound-implying, but silent, visual stimuli, activity in auditory cortex differentiated among sounds related to various animals, musical instruments and objects. These results support the idea that early sensory cortex activity reflects perceptual experience, rather than sensory stimulation alone.

Predicting visual stimuli on the basis of activity in auditory cortices.

There is increasing evidence to suggest that primary sensory cortices can become active in the absence of external stimulation in their respective modalities. This occurs, for example, when stimuli processed via one sensory modality imply features characteristic of a different modality; for instance, visual stimuli that imply touch have been observed to activate the primary somatosensory cortex (SI). In the present study, we addressed the question of whether such cross-modal activations are content specific. To this end, we investigated neural activity in the primary somatosensory cortex of subjects who observed human hands engaged in the haptic exploration of different everyday objects. Using multivariate pattern analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging data, we were able to predict, based exclusively on the activity pattern in SI, which of several objects a subject saw being explored. Along with previous studies that found similar evidence for other modalities, our results suggest that primary sensory cortices represent information relevant for their modality even when this information enters the brain via a different sensory system.

Zusammen mit fr&uuml;heren Studien, die &auml;hnliche Beweise f&uuml;r andere Modalit&auml;ten gefunden, zufolge unsere Ergebnisse prim&auml;ren sensorischen Cortices Informationen relevant f&uuml;r ihre Modalit&auml;t darstellen, auch wenn diese Informationen das Gehirn &uuml;ber einem anderen sensorischen System betritt.

Sehende Note ist mit Content-spezifische Aktivit&auml;t im prim&auml;ren somatosensorischen Kortex korreliert.

In a recent study we found that multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data could predict which of several touch-implying video clips a subject saw, only using voxels from primary somatosensory cortex. Here, we re-analyzed the same dataset using cross-individual MVPA to locate patterns of information that were common across participants' brains. In this procedure a classifier learned to distinguish the neural patterns evoked by each stimulus based on the data from a sub-group of the subjects and was then tested on data from an individual that was not part of that sub-group. We found prediction performance to be significantly above chance both when using voxels from the whole brain and when only using voxels from the postcentral gyrus. SVM voxel weight maps established based on the whole-brain analysis as well as a separate searchlight analysis suggested foci of especially high information content in medial and lateral occipital cortex and around the intraparietal sulcus. Classification across individuals appeared to rely on similar brain areas as classification within individuals. These data show that observing touch leads to stimulus-specific patterns of activity in sensorimotor networks and that these patterns are similar across individuals. More generally, the results suggest that cross-individual MVPA can succeed even when applied to restricted regions of interest.

In einer neueren Studie fanden wir, dass multivariaten Musteranalyse (MVPA) funktionelle Kernspintomographie (fMRI) Daten ein Thema nur mit Voxel aus prim&auml;ren somatosensorischen Kortex sah, die mehrere Note-was bedeutet video-Clips vorhersagen k&ouml;nnte. Hier re-analyzed wir das gleiche Dataset mithilfe Kreuz-individuelle MVPA Muster Informationen suchen, die &uuml;ber Teilnehmer Gehirne betrafen. In diesem Verfahren eine Klassifizierung, die neuronalen Muster, hervorgerufen durch jeden Reiz, basierend auf den Daten von einer Untergruppe der Subjekte zu unterscheiden gelernt und dann auf Daten von Einzelpersonen, die nicht Teil dieser Untergruppe war getestet wurde. Wir fanden die Vorhersage Leistung deutlich &uuml;ber Chance sowohl bei der Verwendung von Voxel aus das ganze Gehirn und wenn nur Voxel aus dem Gyrus postcentralis sein. SVM Voxel Gewicht Karten hergestellt basierend auf der gesamten-Gehirn-Analyse sowie eine separate Suchscheinwerfer-Analyse vorgeschlagene Foki des besonders hohen Informationsgehalt im medialen und lateralen okzipitale Kortex und um den intraparietal Sulcus. Klassifizierung &uuml;ber Einzelpersonen erschien auf &auml;hnliche Hirnregionen als Klassifikation innerhalb von Individuen zu verlassen. Diese Daten zeigen, dass beobachtende Note zu Reiz-spezifische Muster der Aktivit&auml;t im sensomotorischen Netzwerke f&uuml;hrt und dass diese Muster &uuml;ber Individuen &auml;hneln. Die Ergebnissen zufolge generell Kreuz-individuelle MVPA gelingen kann, auch wenn auf eingeschr&auml;nkte Bereiche des Interesses angewendet.
