当细长杆件受到轴向载荷作用时,杆件材料会产生轴向应变,从而导致其在轴向方向上发生变形。

该材料被视为均质且各向同性的,因此其力学性能与位置和方向无关。因此,任一横向的应变必须具有相同的数值。

泊松比是一个基本常数,定义为材料在承受外加载荷时产生的横向应变与轴向应变之比的负值。

使用负号是为了获得泊松比的正值,因为轴向应变和横向应变的符号相反。

具有高泊松比的材料在承受轴向载荷时往往会发生较大的横向收缩,而泊松比较低的材料则受影响较小。
