Feedback in control systems changes gain, stability, and noise response. It does more than reduce error. A basic feedback system uses input, output, error, and feedback signals to shape how the system behaves.

One major effect is on gain. Gain is the amount a system amplifies an input. Without feedback, the gain is changed by the factor 1 + GH, where G is the open-loop gain and H is the feedback factor. This means feedback can increase or reduce gain, depending on the frequency range.

Feedback also affects stability. Stability is a system's ability to follow an input command and keep a controllable output. An unstable system cannot track commands reliably and can produce erratic output. Feedback can push a stable system toward instability, or it can help stabilize a system that starts out unstable.

The system becomes unstable when GH equals negative one. In that case, any finite input leads to an infinite output. A negative feedback loop can also improve stability when the feedback gain is set properly.

Feedback helps reduce the effect of noise and other disturbances. These unwanted signals can interfere with the desired output. If the factor in the feedback loop's denominator is greater than one and the system stays stable, the noise component is reduced.
