Spirograph patterns show how polar coordinates can describe curves with angles and distances. Polar coordinates use a radius r, which is the distance from the origin, and an angle θ, measured counterclockwise from the polar axis. This system gives a useful alternative to Cartesian coordinates, which use x and y values.

A polar curve is written as an equation in the form r = f(θ). As θ changes, the radius changes too, so each point moves farther from or closer to the origin. This makes polar equations especially useful for curves with rotational or radial symmetry.

One classic example is the cardioid, which comes from the equation r(θ) = 1 + sin(θ). As θ increases from 0 to 2π, the radius rises and falls in a repeating pattern. The curve closes on itself and has a broad outer arc with an inward cusp at the origin, so its shape looks like a heart.

A spirograph helps show how this works in a real pattern. The gear’s rotation sets the angle θ, and the pen’s offset from the center sets the radius r. As the gear moves, both values change continuously and trace intricate periodic paths.
