Comparison tests help determine whether an infinite series of positive terms converges or diverges. Instead of finding the sum directly, these methods compare the series with another series whose behavior is already known. That comparison gives a clear answer about whether the total stays finite or grows without bound.

The direct comparison test works when each term of an unknown positive series can be matched to a second series term by term. If the unknown terms are less than or equal to the terms of a known convergent series, then the unknown series also converges. If the unknown terms are greater than or equal to the terms of a known divergent series, then the unknown series also diverges. This test is most useful when the needed inequalities are easy to show.

When term-by-term inequalities are hard to prove, the limit comparison test can help. It compares how two positive series behave as their terms move toward infinity. If the ratio of the two series terms approaches a positive, finite number, then the series have the same long-term behavior. In that case, both series converge or both diverge.

Comparison tests also have practical value in clinical research. For example, daily medication doses can be modeled as terms in an infinite series as they build up in a patient’s bloodstream. Comparing those doses with a known convergent benchmark can show mathematically that the total concentration levels off at a safe, finite value over time.
