A line in three-dimensional space can be described with a vector equation. This method uses a known point on the line and a direction vector. It is a useful way to model straight paths in space.

The transcript uses a surveying laser beam as an example. A laser beam from a surveying instrument can be treated as a line across a construction site. The beam starts at a known point, called P₀, whose position vector is r₀. The beam also has a direction vector v, which is parallel to its path.

Any other point P on the line has its own position vector r. The vector from P₀ to P is r − r₀. Using the triangle law of vector addition, this gives the line equation r = r₀ + t v, where t is a real number. The parameter t scales the direction vector and lets the point move along the line.

As t changes, the position vector r traces the whole line in three-dimensional space. This parametric form is especially helpful in surveying because it gives a continuous description of the beam’s path. By choosing different values of t, students can find points on the beam for alignment, elevation mapping, or object placement on construction sites. Vector equations therefore give a clear and precise way to work with spatial models in engineering.
