Motion in space can be described with a position vector r(t). This vector gives the location of an object, such as a drone moving through the air, at any time t. To study the motion, we look at how the position vector changes over time.

Average velocity is found by dividing the change in position by the length of the time interval. When the interval becomes very small, this average velocity approaches a limit. That limit is the derivative of the position vector with respect to time.

The derivative of the position vector is the velocity vector, written v(t) = r'(t). This vector is tangent to the path of the object. It shows both the direction of motion and the rate of motion at each moment. The speed is the magnitude of the velocity vector. It tells how fast the object is moving, without using direction.

Acceleration is the derivative of the velocity vector, written a(t). It describes how velocity changes with time in both size and direction. For example, if r(t) = t³ i + t² j + k, then differentiating gives v(t) = 3t² i + 2t j. Differentiating again gives a(t) = 6t i + 2j. This chain of derivatives shows how position, velocity, and acceleration work together to describe motion in space.
