Un sistema è lineare se presenta le caratteristiche di omogeneità e additività, insieme definite come proprietà di sovrapposizione, un principio osservato in tutti i sistemi lineari.
I sistemi lineari invarianti nel tempo, LTI, sono sistemi in cui si applicano i principi di linearità e invarianza temporale.
Il comportamento input-output di un sistema LTI può essere completamente definito osservando la sua risposta a un'eccitazione impulsiva al suo ingresso. Una volta nota questa risposta, la reazione del sistema a qualsiasi altro input può essere calcolata utilizzando la convoluzione.
I sistemi lineari sono spesso rappresentati da equazioni differenziali lineari, dove i coefficienti possono o non possono essere funzioni del tempo.
Se i coefficienti sono invarianti nel tempo, il sistema che rappresenta diventa un'equazione differenziale a coefficienti costanti lineare spesso indicata come LCCDE.
Gli LCCDE in genere modellano circuiti elettrici con componenti ideali e sorgenti indipendenti singole o anche multiple utilizzando il principio di sovrapposizione.
Un sistema LTI è in grado di modificare l'ampiezza e la fase di un segnale sinusoidale o esponenziale complesso in ingresso senza modificarne la frequenza, il che lo rende uno strumento essenziale per la progettazione di sistemi per filtrare segnali e immagini rumorose.

Una volta nota questa risposta impulsiva, la reazione del sistema a qualsiasi altro input può essere calcolata usando la convoluzione. Se i coefficienti sono tempo-invarianti, il sistema è rappresentato da un'equazione differenziale lineare a coefficiente costante (LCCDE). Le LCCDE coprono circuiti con componenti ideali e una singola sorgente indipendente, con più sorgenti consentite dal principio di sovrapposizione.

Un sistema LTI può modificare l'ampiezza e la fase di un segnale sinusoidale in ingresso o di un segnale esponenziale complesso senza modificarne la frequenza. Questo rende i sistemi LTI degli strumenti essenziali per la progettazione di filtri per rimuovere il rumore da segnali e immagini. Preservando il contenuto di frequenza durante la regolazione dell’ampiezza e della fase, i sistemi LTI consentono una manipolazione precisa del segnale.

Linear time-invariant systems are defined by linear elements and constant parameters. A system is linear when it shows homogeneity and additivity. These two ideas together are called the superposition property. Superposition is a key rule for analyzing linear systems.

For a linear time-invariant system, the response to an impulse at the input can describe the whole input-output behavior. An impulse is a very short, sudden input. Once the impulse response is known, the response to other inputs can be found with convolution, which combines the input signal with the impulse response.

Linear systems are often written as linear differential equations. In some cases, the coefficients depend on time. When the coefficients do not change with time, the model is called a linear, constant-coefficient differential equation, or LCCDE. LCCDEs can describe circuits with ideal components and a single independent source. The superposition principle also allows multiple sources to be handled.

LTI systems can change the amplitude and phase of a sinusoid or a complex exponential signal without changing its frequency. That makes them useful for filters that remove noise from signals and images. By keeping the frequency content the same while adjusting amplitude and phase, LTI systems support accurate signal processing and control design.
