A space truss is a three-dimensional truss made from members joined at their ends. It is the 3D version of a planar truss. These frameworks often use ball-and-socket joints, which help the structure stay stable and flexible under load.

Space trusses are used in many construction projects because they can adapt to complex forces. Their basic building block is the tetrahedron. A tetrahedron has six members and four triangular faces. Engineers can build larger space trusses by adding one joint and three more members to this unit. This creates a linked network of tetrahedrons that can be shaped for different architectural and engineering needs.

For analysis, space truss members are treated as two-force members only under certain conditions. External loads must act only at the idealized ball-and-socket joints. The weight of the members must also be negligible. If welded or bolted connections are used, the members must meet at one common point to satisfy this condition.

When a member has significant weight, its weight is not ignored. Half of the weight is applied as equally distributed vertical forces at both ends of the member. Equilibrium equations are then used to check that the forces and moments are balanced. This balance helps prevent unwanted deformation or failure.

Rigidity and determinacy are key ideas in space truss design. These properties depend on the relationship between the number of members, m, and the number of joints, n. That relationship is given by a specific equation used in structural analysis.
