The car&#39;s cruise control system has essential controller configurations that ensure consistent speed while monitoring the surroundings and driver performance to prevent accidents.
Fixed-configuration design in traditional control systems involves predetermined controller placement and system performance modifications, known as compensation.

State-feedback control feeds back the state variables through constant real gains to generate the control signal, although it can be impractical for high-order systems.
Other configurations are series-feedback and feedforward compensation, where the feedforward controller is placed in series with the closed-loop system.
Series, feedback, and state feedback are one-degree-of-freedom controller configurations with limitations in performance criteria. They can exhibit poor sensitivity to parameter variations.

Cruise control controller designs help a car keep a steady speed over time. They do this by adjusting the system to meet design goals, even when road conditions change. In traditional control systems, a fixed configuration uses a set controller placement.

Control-system compensation means changing the system’s performance. A common form is series, or cascade, compensation. In this setup, the controller is placed in series with the plant, which is the part of the system being controlled. This placement changes the system dynamics so the response better matches the required performance.

Feedback compensation places the controller in the minor feedback path. That lets engineers fine-tune how the system behaves without directly changing the main feedback loop. State-feedback control uses state variables and constant real gains to create the control signal. It can place the closed-loop poles in desired locations, which improves both transient and steady-state performance.

Some controller designs combine methods. Series-feedback compensation uses both a series controller and a feedback controller. Feedforward compensation places the feedforward controller in series with the closed-loop system and acts on the reference input to improve performance. These choices give designers more ways to shape how the system responds.

Controller configurations are also described by their degrees of freedom. Series, feedback, and state-feedback designs are one-degree-of-freedom, or 1DOF, configurations. They are simpler, but they can have limits such as poor sensitivity to parameter changes or too much overshoot in the step response. State-feedback control can also be costly or hard to use for high-order systems because it may require measuring or estimating many state variables.

Two-degree-of-freedom, or 2DOF, configurations give more flexibility. They allow separate tuning of the feedback path and the reference-tracking path. That makes it easier to meet performance goals and improve robustness to parameter variations. For this reason, 2DOF designs are valuable in advanced control systems such as automotive cruise control, where precise performance matters.
